หลักการทำงานปั๊มลมลูกสูบ ใช้มอเตอร์ไฟฟ้าเป็นต้นกำลังมาขับเคลื่อนลูกสูบให้เคลื่อนที่ขึ้นลง ทำให้เกิดแรงดูดเเละอัดอากาศภายในกระบอกสูบ โดยมีวาล์วทางด้านดูดและวาล์วทางออกทำงานสัมพันธ์กัน ถือเป็นปั๊มลมที่นิยมใช้งานมากที่สุดด้วยความเหมาะสมต่อการใช้งานและราคาที่ไม่สูงมากนักและยังสามารถเคลื่อนย้ายได้สะดวกอีกด้วย โดยปั๊มลมชนิดนี้สามารถสร้างความดันหรือแรงดันลมได้ตั้งแต่ 1 bar ไปจนถึง 1,000 bar เลยทีเดียว โดยแรงอัดจะขึ้นอยู่กับจำนวนขั้นของการอัด ยิ่งขั้นในการอัดมากก็จะสามารถสร้างแรงอัดได้สูงขึ้นตามไปด้วยนั่นเอง สำหรับปั๊มลมหรือเครื่องอัดลมแบบลูกสูบ ยังแบ่งออกเป็นประเภทย่อยๆได้อีกอย่างเช่น Booster Air Compressor, High Pressure Air Compressor ปั๊มลมแรงดันสูงแต่ให้เสียงที่เงียบ เพราะโดยปกติแล้วปั๊มลมประเภทลูกสูบนั้นจะมีข้อเสียอย่างหนึ่งคือเสียงดังขณะเครื่องทำงาน
